Kepler's orbits with corrections due to Special Relativity are explored using the Lagrangian formalism. A very simple model includes only relativistic kinetic energy by de ning a Lagrangian that is consistent with both the relativistic momentum of Special Relativity and Newtonian gravity.
The Lagrange formalism for the fields is introduced, based on the least action principle. Global symmetries are described, and the proof of Noether's theorem given. In addition, the energy-momentum tensor for a field system is constructed as an example.
CONCLUSION The Lagrangian formalism is useful for describing small relativistic corrections to Kepler's orbits. The simplest model includes only relativistic kinetic energy using the replacement m ! m in the Newtonian linear momentum, p = mv.
For both models, the Lagrangian formalism is demonstrated to be equivalent to the vector calculus formalism. The keplerian limit and validity of the approximate relativistic orbit equations is discussed thoroughly in Sec. VI.
